Saint Athanasius the Great
(c. 296–373). Archbishop of Alexandria and a great defender of the Nicene Faith, Saint Athanasius proclaimed the full divinity of the Son and the saving reality of the Incarnation. His writings remain foundational witnesses to Orthodox Trinitarian and Christological teaching.
Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus
(c. 213–270). Bishop of Neocaesarea, missionary, confessor, and wonderworker, Saint Gregory helped establish the Church throughout Pontus. He is remembered in the Orthodox Church for his pastoral ministry, steadfast confession of the Holy Trinity, and the holiness of his life.
Saint Cyril of Alexandria
(c. 376–444). Archbishop of Alexandria and a foremost defender of Orthodox Christology, Saint Cyril taught the unity of Christ as one divine Person, the Word made flesh, and defended the title Theotokos for the Virgin Mary at the Third Ecumenical Council.
Saint Augustine of Hippo
(354–430). Bishop of Hippo and an influential Father of the Latin-speaking Church, Saint Augustine wrote extensively on the Holy Scriptures, the Trinity, repentance, grace, and the Christian life. In the Orthodox tradition, his writings are read with respect and within the common mind and consensus of the Holy Fathers.
Saint Gregory of Nyssa
(c. 335–c. 395). Bishop of Nyssa, brother of Saint Basil the Great, and one of the Cappadocian Fathers. These entries gather the dogmatic treatises, ascetic and moral writings, philosophical works, apologetic works, orations, and letters from the NPNF Gregory of Nyssa volume.
Saint Dionysius the Great of Alexandria
(c. 190–264). Bishop of Alexandria, confessor, teacher, and pastor, Saint Dionysius guided the Church through persecution and controversy. His surviving writings reveal careful engagement with Holy Scripture, pastoral mercy toward the repentant, and steadfast confession of the apostolic Faith.
Julius Africanus
(c. 160–c. 240). Julius Africanus was an early Christian scholar, traveler, historian, and chronographer. His surviving fragments are especially valuable for the early Christian harmonization of the Gospel genealogies and for ancient attempts to arrange biblical history chronologically.
Pierius of Alexandria
(late third century). Pierius was an Alexandrian presbyter, ascetic, teacher, and expositor of Scripture. Ancient witnesses praised his learning and preaching. Only small fragments of his biblical interpretation survive.
Saint Pamphilus of Caesarea
(d. 309). Priest, biblical scholar, and martyr, Saint Pamphilus of Caesarea devoted himself to the study, correction, copying, and preservation of the Holy Scriptures. He crowned his service to the Word of God through martyrdom under the persecution of Maximinus.
Archelaus of Carrhae
(third century). Archelaus was an early bishop and apologist remembered chiefly for the disputation against Manichaeism transmitted under his name. The work defends the goodness of creation and the unity of the Old and New Testaments against dualistic teaching.
Saint Peter of Alexandria
(d. 311). Archbishop and hieromartyr of Alexandria, Saint Peter shepherded the Church during severe persecution. His surviving canons and fragments witness to pastoral care, repentance, the true Incarnation of the Word, and the unity of Christ’s divinity and humanity.
Saint Alexander of Alexandria
(d. 328). Archbishop of Alexandria and predecessor of Saint Athanasius, Saint Alexander opposed Arius and defended the eternal generation and full divinity of the Son. He presided over the Alexandrian Church during the opening struggle that led to the First Ecumenical Council.
Saint Methodius of Olympus
(d. c. 311). Bishop, theologian, and hieromartyr, Saint Methodius defended the goodness of creation, human freedom, bodily resurrection, chastity, and the Church’s hope in Christ. His writings frequently join dogmatic teaching with typological and allegorical interpretation of Scripture.
Asterius of Amasea
(c. 350–410). Bishop of Amasea in Pontus, a preacher of unusual vividness whose surviving sermons expound the parables of Christ and press their moral claim on the rich.
Saint Ephraim the Syrian
(c. 306–373). Deacon of Edessa and the greatest of the Syriac fathers, called the Harp of the Spirit. This discourse on the Transfiguration survives in a Coptic fragment.
St. Gregory the Dialogist (the Great)
(c. 540–604). Pope of Rome, monk and pastor, known in the East as Gregory the Dialogist. Begun while he was papal envoy at Constantinople and finished as Pope, his Moralia in Job expounds the whole book of Job three times over — historically, allegorically and morally — and remains the great patristic commentary on Job.
Blessed Theophylact of Ohrid
(c. 1055 – c. 1107). Archbishop of Ohrid in Bulgaria, Blessed Theophylact wrote verse-by-verse explanations of the Gospels that distill the patristic consensus — above all Saint John Chrysostom — into a clear and pastoral commentary long treasured in the Orthodox Church. Victorinus of Pettau
(d. c. 304). Bishop of Poetovio in Pannonia and martyr under the persecution of Diocletian, Victorinus wrote the earliest surviving Latin commentary on the Apocalypse of St. John, later revised by St. Jerome. This page gathers his verse-by-verse exposition of Revelation.
Saint Basil the Great
(c. 330–379). Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, monastic founder, and one of the three Cappadocian Fathers, Saint Basil defended Nicene orthodoxy and left a body of dogmatic, ascetical, and exegetical writing. Saint Hilary of Poitiers
(c. 310–367). Bishop of Poitiers in Gaul, exiled for his defense of the Nicene faith against Arianism. His Homilies on the Psalms read the Psalter as speaking in the persons of the Father, the Son, or the Prophet, finding throughout it the mystery of Christ.
Origen
(c. 184–253). The foremost biblical scholar of the early Church and head of the catechetical school of Alexandria, Origen wrote a vast Commentary on Matthew of which Books X–XIV survive here, along with two earlier fragments, offering close verse-by-verse exposition of the Gospel.
