Common Questions
How do I have a PDF read aloud for free?
Drop your PDF into the tool above and press "Read Aloud." The page is rendered in your browser and read back to you sentence by sentence, with no account and no cost.
Can it read a Word document aloud?
Yes. Open a .docx file the same way, and it is rendered and read aloud using the same narrator voices as the rest of the tool.
Does it work with plain text or Markdown files?
Yes. Text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files are supported alongside PDF and Word documents.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. Your document is opened and rendered entirely in your browser. Only the text of the passage currently being narrated is briefly sent out to generate its audio.
Can I choose the reading voice or change the speed?
Yes. Choose between the Ryan and Bella narrator voices, and adjust the reading speed from 0.75× to 1.5×. Your preference is shared with the rest of the site.
How does the live sentence highlighting work?
The tool has no word-by-word timing from the narration service, so it estimates where the voice is from the real length of the audio clip and the punctuation in each sentence, then highlights that sentence in the document without altering the text itself.
Do I need an account to use it?
No. There is no account, no sign up, and no file size limit imposed by us.
