Sirach 36

1Have mercy upon us, O Lord God of all, and behold us:Τῷ φοβουμένῳ Κύριον οὐκ ἀπαντήσει κακὸν, ἀλλʼ ἐν πειρασμῷ καὶ πάλιν ἐξελεῖται.

2And send your fear upon all the nations that seek not after you.Ἀνὴρ σοφὸς οὐ μισήσει νόμον, ὁ δὲ ὑποκρινόμενος ἐν αὐτῷ, ὡς ἐν καταιγίδι πλοῖον.

3Lift up your hand against the strange nations, and let them see your power.Ἄνθρωπος συνετὸς ἐμπιστεύσει νόμῳ, καὶ ὁ νόμος αὐτῷ πιστὸς ὡς ἐρώτημα δικαίων.

4As you were sanctified in us before them: so be you magnified among them before us.Ἑτοίμασον λόγον, καὶ οὕτως ἀκουθήσῃ, σύνδησον παιδείαν καὶ ἀποκρίθητι.

5And let them know you, as we have known you, that there is no God but only you, O God.Τροχὸς ἁμάξης σπλάγχνα μωροῦ, καὶ ὡς ἄξων στρεφόμενος ὁ διαλογισμὸς αὐτοῦ.

6Show new signs, and make other strange wonders: glorify your hand and your right arm, that they may set forth your wondrous works.Ἵππος εἰς ὀχείαν ὡς φίλος μῶκος, ὑποκάτω παντὸς ἐπικαθημένου χρεμετίζει.

7Raise up indignation, and pour out wrath: take away the adversary, and destroy the enemy.Διατί ἡμέρα ἡμέρας ὑπερέχει, καὶ πᾶν φῶς ἡμέρας ἐνιαυτοῦ ἀφʼ ἡλίου;

8Sake the time short, remember the covenant, and let them declare your wonderful works.Ἐν γνώσει Κυρίου διεχωρίσθησαν, καὶ ἠλλοίωσε καιροὺς καὶ ἑορτάς·

9Let him that escapes be consumed by the rage of the fire; and let them perish that oppress the people.ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀνύψωσε καὶ ἡγίασε, καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἔθηκεν εἰς ἀριθμὸν ἡμερῶν.

10Strike in sunder the heads of the rulers of the heathen, that say, There is none other but we.Καὶ ἄνθρωποι πάντες ἀπὸ ἐδάφους, καὶ ἐκ γῆς ἐκτίσθη Ἀδάμ.

11Gather all the tribes of Jacob together, and inherit you them, as from the beginning. Though I was the last to wake up, yet I received their inheritance as from the beginning.Ἐν πλήθει ἐπιστήμης Κύριος διεχώρισεν αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἠλλοίωσε τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν.

12O Lord, have mercy upon the people that is called by your name, and upon Israel, whom you have named your firstborn.Ἐξ αὐτῶν εὐλόγησε καὶ ἀνύψωσε, καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἡγίασε, καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἤγγισεν· ἀπʼ αὐτῶν κατηράσατο, καὶ ἐταπείνωσε, καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ στάσεως αὐτῶν.

13O be merciful to Jerusalem, your holy city, the place of your rest.Ὡς πηλὸς κεραμέως ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν εὐδοκίαν αὐτοῦ· οὕτως ἄνθρωποι ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ ποιήσαντος αὐτοὺς, ἀποδοῦναι αὐτοῖς κατὰ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτοῦ.

14Fill Sion with your unspeakable oracles, and your people with your glory:Ἀπέναντι τοῦ κακοῦ τὸ ἀγαθὸν, καὶ ἀπέναντι τοῦ θανάτου ἡ ζωὴ, οὕτως ἀπέναντι εὐσεβοῦς ἀμαρτωλός.

15Give testimony to those that you have possessed from the beginning, and raise up prophets that have been in your name.Καὶ οὕτως ἔμβλεψον εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ ὑψίστου, δύο δύο ἓν κατέναντι τοῦ ἑνός.

16Reward them that wait for you, and let your prophets be found faithful.Κᾀγὼ ἔσχατος ἠγρύπνησα, καὶ κατεκληρονόμησα αὐτοὺς καθὼς ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς.

17O Lord, hear the prayer of your servants, according to the blessing of Aaron over your people, that all they which dwell upon the earth may know that you are the Lord, the eternal God.Ἐλέησον λαὸν, Κύριε, κεκλημένον ἐπʼ ὀνόματί σου, καὶ Ἰσραὴλ ὃν πρωτογόνῳ ὡμοίωσας.

18The belly devours all meats, yet is one meat better than another.Οἰκτείρησον πόλιν ἁγιάσματός σου Ἱερουσαλὴμ, πόλιν καταπαύματός σου.

19As the palate tastes various kinds of venison: so does an heart of understanding false speeches.Πλῆσον Σιὼν ἆραι τὰ λόγιά σου, καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης σου τὸν λαόν σου.

20A froward heart causes heaviness: but a man of experience will recompense him.Δὸς μαρτύριον τοῖς ἐν ἀρχῇ κτίσμασί σου, καὶ ἔγειρον προφητείας τὰς ἐπʼ ὀνόματί σου·

21A woman will receive every man, yet is one daughter better than another.δὸς μισθὸν τοῖς ὑπομένουσί σε, καὶ οἱ προφῆταί σου ἐμπιστευθήτωσαν.

22The beauty of a woman cheers the countenance, and a man loves nothing better.Εἰσάκουσον, Κύριε, δεήσεως τῶν ἱκετῶν σου, κατὰ τὴν εὐλογίαν Ἀαρὼν περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ σου, καὶ γνώσονται πάντες οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ὅτι σὺ Κύριος εἶ ὁ Θεὸς τῶν αἰώνων.

23If there be kindness, meekness, and comfort, in her tongue, then is not her husband like other men.Πᾶν βρῶμα φάγεται κοιλία, ἔστι δὲ βρῶμα βρώματος κάλλιον.

24He that gets a wife begins a possession, a help like to himself, and a pillar of rest.Φάρυγξ γεύεται βρώματα θήρας, οὕτως καρδία συνετὴ λόγους ψευδεῖς.

25Where no hedge is, there the possession is spoiled: and he that has no wife will wander up and down mourning.Καρδία στρεβλὴ δώσει λύπην, καὶ ἄνθρωπος πολύπειρος ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ.

26Who will trust a thief well appointed, that skips from city to city? so who will believe a man that has no house, and lodges wherever the night takes him?Πάντα ἄῤῥενα ἐπιδέξεται γυνὴ, ἔστι δὲ θυγάτηρ θυγατρὸς κρείσσων.

27Κάλλος γυναικὸς ἱλαρύνει πρόσωπον, καὶ ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν ἐπιθυμίαν ἀνθρώπου ὑπεράγει.

28Εἰ ἔστιν ἐπὶ γλώσσης αὐτῆς ἔλεος καὶ πραΰτης, οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καθʼ υἱοὺς ἀνθρώπων.

29Ὁ κτώμενος γυναῖκα ἐνάρχεται κτήσεως, βοηθὸν κατʼ αὐτὸν καὶ στύλον ἀναπαύσεων.

30Οὗ οὐκ ἐστι φραγμὸς, διαρπαγήσεται κτῆμα, καὶ οὗ οὐκ ἔστι γυνὴ, στενάξει πλανώμενος.

31Τίς γὰρ πιστεύσει εὐζώνῳ λῃστῇ σφαλλομένῳ ἐκ πόλεως εἰς πόλιν; οὕτως ἀνθρώπῳ μὴ ἔχοντι νοσσιὰν καὶ καταλύοντι οὗ ἐὰν ὀψισῇ.
