Dura Deira

(circle, circumference) (Dan. 3:1) — a vast plain in the land of Babylon, on which Nebuchadnezzar set up a golden image. Some think that this plain, still called Dura to this day, was located on the left bank of the Tigris, while others, with greater probability, suppose that it is identical with a valley southeast of Baalath (Baalath), where, according to the testimony of the learned traveler Oppert, on the so-called Tell el-Mokattah, remains of the pedestal of a colossal statue still exist to this day.
