Although this disease is not often indicated in Holy Scripture, it appears to have been very widespread in Palestine—Jehoram was afflicted with it in its most acute form (2 Chron. 21:15)—and to this day the inhabitants of Palestine often suffer from the tormenting attacks of dysentery, owing partly to the influence of the climate and partly to the immoderate consumption of fruit and unboiled green vegetables.
