Earrings
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Gen. 35:4; Exod. 32:2 and elsewhere)—ornaments worn in the East from ancient times by women and by children of both sexes. Scripture speaks directly of women and children wearing them; Exodus 35:22 may include men, though the source judges earrings to have been primarily women’s adornment among the Hebrews. Midianite and Ishmaelite men also wore them (Judg. 8:24–26). Earrings sometimes served as amulets (Gen. 35:4), and Isaiah mentions ear ornaments among objects associated with enchantment (Isa. 3:20 in the source’s enumeration).
