Herod the Great rebuilt and greatly enlarged the Second Temple complex, so extensively that little of the earlier structure remained visible. The sanctuary stood upon a white-stone platform and retained the tripartite order of porch, Holy Place, and Most Holy Place. The Holy Place contained the lampstand, the table for the Bread of the Presence, and the incense altar. A great golden vine adorned the entrance, and the flat roof was fitted with spikes to keep birds away. Side buildings provided numerous chambers.
