Master of the Feast
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(John 2:8-9)—the person responsible for supervising a banquet’s arrangements and service and, among other duties, judging the wine presented to the guests. At Cana the servants brought the water made wine to the master of the feast. He did not know its source, though the servants did, and he praised the bridegroom for keeping the good wine until then. His testimony provides an independent acknowledgment of the sign’s quality within the narrative.
