Orache, or saltwort Who

- a plant named only once in Scripture, in Job 30:4 as 'mallows by the bushes.' The Septuagint uses Atriplex. J. Good thought the plant probably belonged to the genus Salsola, the familiar saltworts. One species, Atriplex halimus, grows in dry sandy places such as the Arabian wilderness and is eaten by the poor, especially in years of famine. It has a long branching stem, dense leaves, and small reddish flowers at the ends of its branches. Job was reviled not only by the rich and his former friends but even by the poor whose food was this worthless shrub.
