Pine (pevg)

(Isa. 60:13). In the Hexaemeron of Basil the Great, translated from Greek into Church Slavonic, pine stands in place of pevg; thus one species of pine, a familiar needle-bearing and resinous tree, is meant. Some, however, understand a distinct kind of cedar, and others a kind of cypress. The pevg is plainly a stately and majestic tree, and for that reason the word is used in the cited verse as an image of the Church’s flourishing state: “The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee”—that is, Jerusalem—“the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together.”
