Ahasuerus (Ashur)

— a title of various Persian kings. The explanation of this name, according to Fürst, is “prince and head”; according to Gesenius, “lion-king.” In the Bible, under this name, the following kings are mentioned: a) (Dan. 9:1) Astyages, king of Media, son of Cyaxares, father of Darius the Mede, grandfather of Cyrus; b) (Ezra 4:6) Cambyses, son and successor of Cyrus, king of Persia; c) (Esther 1:1) son and successor of Darius son of Hystaspes, Xerxes, king of Persia.
