(strong, brave) (1 Macc. 7:5; 9:12) — an unworthy Jewish high priest in the time of the Maccabees, who slandered Judas Maccabeus before King Demetrius Soter, and thereby brought many calamities upon the Jews. He died in terrible torment, at the very time when, in view of a close rapprochement with the Greeks, he had ordered the stone barrier separating the inner court from the court of the Gentiles to be broken down in the Temple of Jerusalem; namely, he was struck with a severe stroke and could not utter a single word.
