: a) (1 Macc. 1:1) king of Macedon, son of Philip II, greatest of conquerors. His famous history is, without doubt, known to every reader of world history. In Holy Scripture the kingdom of Alexander of Macedon is symbolically depicted in various visions of the prophet Daniel, such as: in the great image seen in a dream by King Nebuchadnezzar (Dan. 2:32–39); in the vision of four great beasts (Dan. 7:6); in the vision of the ram with two horns and the goat with one horn, out of which afterward grew four horns (Dan. 8:5–8);
