Ammon

(Jer. 46) — the name of an Egyptian deity, mentioned by the prophets Jeremiah (46:25), Ezekiel (30:15), and Nahum (3:8), chiefly in connection with the city of No, or No-Ammon (the Hebrew name of the city of Thebes, or, among the Greeks and Romans, Ammon). The deity known as Ammon was the chief god of Diospolis, or Thebes, and was honored much as Zeus, or Jupiter, was among the Greeks. In the deserts of Libya, in the oasis of Siwa, stood the famous temple and oracle of Ammon, once visited by Alexander of Macedon.
