Apollonia

(Acts 17:1) — a city in Macedonia, lying between Amphipolis and Thessalonica, in the province of Mygdonia. The Apostle Paul passed through this city during his second journey (Acts 16:12–15 [as given]) in the year 52, on the way from Amphipolis to Thessalonica. The coins of Macedonian Apollonia bear on the obverse the head of Apollo, the chief deity of this city, and on the reverse a vessel with the Greek inscription Apollonos, that is, “belonging to Apollo.”
