Archelaus

(ruler of the people) (Matt. 2:22) — son of Herod the Great. After his father’s death, in the very year of the Lord Jesus’s birth in the flesh, Archelaus took over the government of Judea and reigned there at the time when Joseph and Mary, with the divine Infant Jesus, were about to return from Egypt, where they had withdrawn to escape Herod’s fury. Archelaus, however, closely resembled his father in cruelty and malice of character; for this reason the Holy Family was afraid to return to Bethlehem and settled for a time in the Galilean town of Nazareth.
In the tenth year of his rule Archelaus was deposed and exiled to Vienne in Gaul, where he died. The cause of this was his excessive cruelty and pride, which drove the Jews to complain of him before the emperor: thus, once, at the feast of Passover, he had 3,000 Jews killed in the Temple and the city (Antiquities IX, 2, 3 [as given]).
