Bethulia
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(house of Jehovah, or house of ascent) (Judith 4:6; 6:10) — a city mentioned only in the Book of Judith. According to the indications of this book, it was located in the tribe of Manasseh, in the hill country south of Dothan, opposite the valley of Jezreel (Judith 6:11, 12; 7:1, 3, 4). Beneath the city were two springs, from which the inhabitants drew their water (6:11; 7:7). This city, standing on a hill and sufficiently fortified, was taken by Holofernes, the Assyrian commander, who, having seized the springs, subjected it to a long siege, hoping to force the inhabitants to surrender through thirst; but the pious courage of Judith, as is known from the Book of Judith (8, 16), saved them from the threatening danger.
The location of the city is not precisely known. At present, however, it is thought to be the present-day locality Sanur, three miles south of the locality Dothan, occupying at present a wholly inaccessible position.
