Dothan Dothaim

(well, spring gushing upward) (Gen. 37:17; 2 Kings 6:18; Judith 4:6) — a place near which Joseph’s brothers sold him to the Ishmaelites; notable also as the dwelling place of Elisha and the site of the vision of fiery horses and chariots around Elisha, and where he struck the Syrians with blindness. Dothan is mentioned several times in the book of Judith in the description of the siege of Bethulia by Holofernes. Eusebius and Jerome place it 12 Roman miles north of Samaria. Its ruins were recently discovered by Robinson and others. The well into which, according to tradition, Joseph was thrown is still shown to travelers today.
