(Lev. 14:4). Under the Mosaic Law birds, like animals, were divided into clean and unclean. Clean birds could be eaten, while unclean birds were forbidden. The source broadly describes grain- and seed-eating birds as clean and birds that consumed flesh, fish, or carrion as unclean. Clean birds were offered in many sacrifices (Lev. 1:14–17; 5:7–10; 14:4–7). A person unable to bring a kid or lamb for purification might offer two turtledoves or two young pigeons.
