Brimstone (Sulfur)

(Gen. 19:24)—a combustible mineral associated in Scripture with the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. Bitumen and sulfur occur in the Dead Sea region, but the biblical narrative presents the catastrophe as the LORD’s judgment rather than merely a natural accident. Elsewhere sulfur and burning pitch signify desolation and divine punishment (Job 18:15; Isa. 34:9), culminating in Revelation’s image of the lake of fire (Rev. 20:10, 15).
