(Isa. 41:19 [as given]) — a tree of the oak family, very heavy and handsome when worked, used for turnery and joinery. Together with cypress and pine, this wood served as material for the building of the Temple of Jerusalem. The fruits of the beech are used to fatten swine and domestic fowl; besides this, oil is extracted from them for food and lighting. The beech tree grows throughout central and southern Europe, and is still found on the mountains of Lebanon, for the most part in the mountainous regions of western Asia, where it attains a considerable size.
