(Sir. 31:20; 37:30)—in older biblical and medical usage, a bilious intestinal illness marked by nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. The ancient term should not automatically be identified with modern epidemic cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae. Sirach warns that gluttony brings sickness and sleeplessness.
