Crete

(Titus 1:5) - one of the larger Mediterranean islands. Its western end lies southeast of the Morea and its eastern end southwest of Rhodes. The island is about 160 English miles long and from six to thirty-six miles wide. Its later name Candia came from the fortified city of Candia, built by the Saracens near the middle of the northern coast. Crete is very mountainous, though it contains fertile plains producing abundant wheat, grapes, olives, lemons, and oranges. Its ancient history is enveloped in mythic tradition.
