Titus
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(honorable; Gal. 2:1)—a Gentile Christian and trusted coworker of the Apostle Paul. Paul refused demands that Titus be circumcised, defending the freedom of Gentile believers (Gal. 2:3–5). Titus served as Paul’s emissary to Corinth, helped bring the difficult relationship with that church toward reconciliation, and assisted with the collection for the saints (2 Cor. 7:6–16; 8:6, 16–23). Paul later left him in Crete to set in order what remained and appoint elders in every town (Titus 1:5). Church tradition remembers him as bishop of Crete; the New Testament does not call him one of the Seventy or state that he came from Antioch.
