Death
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
—both bodily and spiritual. Bodily death is the separation of the soul from the body that it animated. Spiritual death is the soul’s loss of divine grace, which had quickened it to the higher spiritual life. The soul does not perish as the body decays; when dead through sin it remains in darkness, grief, and suffering. Scripture teaches that death entered the world through the sin of humanity’s first parents: “by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men” (Rom. 5:12).
