Dragon’s Well
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Neh. 2:13) — a spring located outside Jerusalem, between the Dung Gate and the Valley Gate. In Robinson’s opinion, this was none other than the spring Gihon, in the valley of Hinnom; Porter, Lewin, and others hold the same view. The Serpent’s Pool, mentioned by Josephus (Wars V, 3, 2), was probably situated nearby and corresponds to the present-day Birket Mamilla; our own Russian traveler Norov identifies the spring in question with the Spring of the Blessed Virgin.
