Asaph

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(gatherer) — the name of three persons: a) (1 Chron. 6:39) son of Berechiah, of the line of Gershon, son of Levi, the most celebrated singer, one of the chiefs of the singers under David. He was also a seer. To him are ascribed the following psalms: 49 [50], 72 [73], 80 [81], and 82 [83]. The office of choir leader appears to have remained hereditary in his family (1 Chron. 25:1). Some psalms may have been written by one of his descendants, since their content points to later times (see Ps. 73 [74], 78 [79], 79 [80]); b) (2 Kings 18:18) father of Joah, the recorder under King Hezekiah; c) (Neh. 2:8) keeper of the royal forests under King Artaxerxes.
