Ed Manasse
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(witness) (Josh. 22:34) — the name of an altar erected near the Jordan by the tribes of Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh — an altar built not for the offering of sacrifice, properly speaking, but as a witness to the unity of faith and service to the Lord which they would maintain even across the Jordan, together with the rest of the tribes (vv. 28, 29). “The altar Ed,” said the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad, “is a witness between us that the LORD is God” (v. 34).
