Elihu

(God my — He, that is, Jehovah) (Job 32:2, 5, 6; 34:1, and elsewhere) — son of Barachel, one of Job’s friends. He is called a Buzite, and so was descended from the line of Buz, son of Nahor (Gen. 22:21). This supposition is supported by the description given of Job’s other friends. In his speech to Job (chs. 32–37) he calls himself young in years compared with the rest of Job’s friends. He tries to reconcile the disputants and argues that afflictions are sent upon men by God in order to move them to repentance.

In highly eloquent and poetic fashion he describes in his speech the greatness and wondrous works of the LORD the Creator and Almighty: “Behold, God is great,” says Elihu, "and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out. For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof… Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?… He covereth his hands with the light [lightning]; and commandeth it what to strike… The noise thereof sheweth concerning it (the thunder), the cattle also concerning the vapour.
