Gammadim

(from Syriac and Arabic: brave warriors). This word occurs only in the prophet Ezekiel (27:11). “The Gammadim were in thy towers (of Tyre); they hung their quivers round about upon thy walls; they perfected thy beauty.” Probably by this designation is meant a garrison, a guard force, city watchmen. In ancient coastal fortresses it was customary to hang shields and quivers on the battlements of the walls, as can be seen from a depiction of such a fortress found by Layard at Kuyunjik.
