(Num. 24:6)—gardens among the Hebrews were generally simple and only lightly cultivated. Scripture also mentions them in Job 8:16, 2 Kings 21:18, Song 4:12, and Ecclesiastes 2:5. They were chiefly planted with fruit and shade trees, aromatic plants, herbs, roses, and olives. A fountain, well, reservoir, or stream passing through the garden was considered indispensable. The gardens around Damascus were watered by small channels running through every part; Proverbs 21:1 and Isaiah 58:11 provide the source’s biblical comparisons.
Gethsemane is also remembered as the garden where the Lord often went with His disciples and where, before His Passion, He prayed in agony (Matt. 26:36 and elsewhere).
