Henna

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Song 1:14; 4:13) - a small, beautiful aromatic tree, ten to twelve feet high, flowering in clusters and spreading a strong camphor-like fragrance. It grows abundantly in Egypt. Eastern women especially valued it, carrying its flowers, wearing them on the breast, decorating their homes with them, and taking them to baths. Powdered leaves were also used for various purposes.
