Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—the name of persons and a city. (1) (Num. 26:32–33; Josh. 17:2–3) a son of Gilead and ancestor of the Hepherite clan and of Zelophehad. (2) (1 Chron. 4:6) a son of Ashhur, father of Tekoa. (3) (1 Chron. 11:36) a man from Mecherah represented among David’s mighty warriors. (4) (Josh. 12:17; 1 Kings 4:10) a Canaanite royal city and later an administrative district under Solomon. Its site is uncertain.
