Herod Philip II

- son of Herod the Great and Cleopatra of Jerusalem. He governed Batanea, Trachonitis, and Auranitis with the title of tetrarch (Luke 3:1). His rule was marked by moderation and justice. On the site of ancient Paneas he built a new city named Caesarea (Matt 16:13); he also rebuilt the city of Bethsaida in lower Gaulanitis and renamed it Julias. There he died in A.D. 34. He was married to Salome, the daughter of Philip I and Herodias. The dynasty of the Herods ruled in Judea for 140 years.
