(2 Chron. 19:11)—the head and chief of the priests in the Jewish Church, the senior, great, and first priest, as Aaron was and as were his successors from the eldest families of his descendants. Consecration to the high-priestly office was performed according to a special rite and was distinguished by a copious pouring of holy chrism upon the head of the one consecrated. The high priest’s garments were more majestic and costly than those of ordinary priests. The rite and vestments are described in Exodus 28–29 and Leviticus 8.
