The Church is holy because Christ sanctified her through His suffering, teaching, prayer, and sacraments. He loved the Church and gave Himself for her, cleansing her so that she might be holy and without blemish (Eph. 5:25-27). Sinners may be present in the Church; those who repent are cleansed, while persistent and unrepentant sin is subject to ecclesial discipline and God’s judgment. Their presence does not make holiness cease to be the Church’s divine calling and gift (1 Cor. 5:13; 2 Tim. 2:19).
