Holy Trinity

—the word Trinity does not itself occur in Scripture, yet the Church uses it to confess the biblical revelation of the one God in three divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Theophilus of Antioch employed an early Greek triadic term, and Tertullian used the Latin trinitas; the terminology was refined as the Church defended the apostolic faith. The doctrine is not a belief in three gods, but in one divine essence and glory, personally possessed without division by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
