Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Judith 8:1) - a woman of the tribe of Simeon, daughter of Merari of Bethulia. Her story is contained in the sixteen-chapter canonical Old Testament book known as the Book of Judith. The source dates her heroic deliverance of Jerusalem and Judea from the Babylonian commander Holofernes to Nebuchadnezzar's eighteenth year and the high priesthood of Joiakim, about 589 BC. Holofernes besieged Bethulia, leaving it without bread and water. Judith, a wealthy and God-fearing widow, offered to save her distressed countrymen.
