(Acts 27:1, 3)—a centurion of the Augustan Cohort who received Paul and other prisoners for transport to Italy. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem after opponents from Asia stirred up a crowd in the Temple. A Roman commander rescued him, and after learning of a plot by more than forty men to kill him, sent him under armed guard to Caesarea. Felix kept Paul imprisoned for two years, although the accusations did not warrant death, and left him in custody for his successor Porcius Festus.
Festus, King Agrippa, Bernice, and those assembled with them agreed that Paul had done nothing deserving death or imprisonment, but because he had appealed to Caesar he had to be sent to Rome (Acts 21–26).
