Lust

—a disordered desire that seeks pleasure, possession, or another person contrary to God’s will. Scripture can use “desire” neutrally or positively, so context determines whether the word is sinful; lust specifically names desire consented to and directed toward evil. James writes that a person is tempted when drawn away and enticed by one’s own desire, and that desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin (Jas. 1:14-15). The remedy is not hatred of the body but purification of desire through grace, chastity, self-control, and love.
