Lycaonia

(Acts 14:6-11) - an inland region of Asia Minor bordering Phrygia, Isauria, Cilicia, and Galatia. It was chiefly pastoral; its best-known cities were Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe. The Lycaonian speech mentioned in Acts 14:11 was thought to combine Assyrian or Syriac and Greek dialects, and many commentators regarded the Lycaonians themselves as a mixed people. The region's boundaries changed with political events, but its position and natural character never gave it a leading place in world history. Its soil was poor and better suited to grazing than to the development of settled civilization.
