Nimrah

—this name occurs in the Book of Numbers (32:3), but the place in question appears, in other passages of Holy Scripture, to be called Beth-nimrah. It was one of the cities of the tribe of Gad and was located on the eastern side of the Jordan, and if its name signifies “lair of leopards or panthers,” then there is some ground for supposing that it was frequented by these animals in ancient times. At present, on the site of the city of Nimrah, are found the ruins of Nimrin, eight English miles to the northeast of Jericho and on the borders of Wadi Nimrin.
