(victory of the people) (Acts 6:5)—a native of Antioch, converted, it is thought, from paganism to the Christian faith, one of the deacons of the apostolic Church, ordained by the apostles together with Stephen the first martyr to minister to the poor. Some consider him the founder of the sect of the Nicolaitans, but it is difficult to agree that a man filled with the Holy Spirit could have been the founder of so immoral a sect.
