Phalaris

(3 Macc. 5:12, 27)—the notorious ruler of Acragas in Sicily, traditionally remembered for extreme cruelty and the story of a bronze bull used as an instrument of execution. Third Maccabees invokes him as a comparison for Ptolemy IV Philopator. The bronze-bull narrative belongs to later Greek historical tradition and cannot be verified in all its details.
