Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Sirach 24:14) - a beautiful spreading tree of the plane-tree family, growing throughout the East and also in Russia. It is an expressive image of fresh strength and life, glory and magnificence. Ezekiel uses it in connection with Assyria, and Sirach as a symbol of God's great wisdom. Its wood serves for shipbuilding and many carpentry and cabinetmaking purposes.
