Cinnamon

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Exod 30:23; Prov 7:17; Song 4:14; Sirach 24:15; Rev 18:13) - fragrant aromatic bark taken from a tree of the laurel family, called kinnamon in Church Slavonic. Ground to powder, it formed part of the sacred anointing oil used upon the tabernacle, sacred vessels, and sacred ministers (Exod 30:23-33). The cinnamon tree also grew in Solomon's enclosed garden (Song 4:14).
