Seron
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(source form Siron) (1 Macc. 3:13–23)—a commander in the service of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Hearing that Judas Maccabaeus had gathered a faithful company, Seron marched against him with a strong army. Judas encouraged his small force to trust in Heaven, defeated Seron near Beth-horon, and pursued his troops into the plain. Josephus also calls Seron commander of the Syrian army; the encyclopedia’s wording that makes him commander in Coele-Syria is presented as an uncertain variant.
