Sermon on the Mount

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Matt. 5-7; compare Luke 6:17-49)—Jesus’ great discourse on the character and life of God’s kingdom. Matthew places it on a mountain, where Jesus sits and teaches his disciples before the crowd. Luke records closely related sayings after Jesus descends to a level place. The source combines the two accounts and adds explanatory paraphrases; the present translation distinguishes the evangelists while presenting their shared theological center.

Scripture cited

Luke 6:17
