Shechem

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—(1) the son of Hamor and prince of the city of Shechem. He violated Dinah and then sought marriage with her; Simeon and Levi killed the men of the city after they had submitted to circumcision (Gen. 34). The narrative records violence and covenantal failure without commending the acts of either side. (2) A son of Shemida in the Manassite genealogy (1 Chron. 7:19).
