Shechem

(shoulder; more precisely, the upper back between the shoulders)—the name of a person and a city. (1) (Gen. 34:2, 26) son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land of Shechem. Simeon and Levi treacherously killed him and the men of his city after his dishonorable treatment of their sister Dinah. (2) a celebrated Canaanite city in Samaria, perhaps named after Hamor’s son and also appearing in the form Sychar (John 4:5). It is already named in Abraham’s time as the place of Shechem (Gen. 12:6) and later as the city of Shechem (Gen. 33:18).
Jacob buried the foreign gods and ornaments of his household beneath the oak near Shechem, and his sons pastured his flocks in the surrounding country (Gen. 35:4; 37:12–14).
